70th anniversary

From pressure cookers to frying pans

In 2026, SCANPAN celebrates its 70th anniversary. Since 1956, we have been recognised internationally for uncompromising cookware and accessories for every kitchen, rooted in Danish craftsmanship, functionality and innovation.

Seventy years after our first pressure-cast frying pan, we are marking the occasion by celebrating our oldest range, Classic: a true SCANPAN original.

SCANPAN's history

Timeline

Founded by Danish inventor G.A.L. Thorsen

A great deal has happened since the world’s first pressure-cast frying pan was created, almost by chance, in 1956. Inventor and businessman G.A.L. Thorsen was developing a pressure cooker. The project was abandoned, but the lid intended for the pressure cooker became the starting point for a frying pan.

Timeline

The nonstick coating was developed

In 1976, our current factory in Ryomgård opened, and experiments began with beeswax polishing to achieve a glossy surface: the first step towards our well-known nonstick coating.

Timeline

The name changes from Pyrolux to SCANPAN

In 2002, we changed our name from Pyrolux to SCANPAN.

Timeline

Stratanium® nonstick introduced

2017 was the year we introduced our Stratanium® coating, followed by Stratanium®+ the year after.

Timeline

Stratanium® Leap introduced

2026 marks not only our 70th anniversary, but also the year in which, after many years of work, we can present our newest coating, Stratanium® Leap, produced without PFAS.
