FAQ
About our bread knives
A bread knife has a distinctive long, serrated blade that cuts through bread without crushing the crumb. This type of knife is indispensable for everything from large crusty loaves to smaller baguettes, and it can also be used for cakes and for fruit or vegetables with a firm skin and soft centre. The serrations give you clean cuts, whether you are slicing white or wholegrain bread.
- Large loaves with a firm crust
- Baguettes and smaller loaves
- Cakes and pies
- Tomatoes and citrus fruit
A bread knife from the Classic range is a versatile tool that can handle many kitchen tasks beyond slicing bread. If you also need a smaller, precise knife for fruit and vegetables, explore SCANPAN’s stylish vegetable knives.
- Cuts easily through firm crusts without damaging the soft centre
- Preserves the structure of the bread and minimises crumbs
- Suitable for bread, cakes and certain vegetables
- The cutting performance lasts, and the blade needs sharpening less often than a straight-edged knife
A serrated bread knife is therefore a practical choice when you want precision and a clean result, whatever type of bread or baked goods you are working with. If you want a complete set of knives for every kitchen task, explore SCANPAN’s high-quality knife sets.
SCANPAN Classic bread knives are made from German stainless steel, combining sharpness, strength and resistance to wear. The blade is taper-ground to a 26° sharpening angle, providing efficient, even cutting performance – even after extended use. A hardness of 56–57 Rockwell helps the knife remain sharp and robust for everyday use.
The ergonomically shaped handle has a distinctive curve. Its non-slip synthetic material provides a secure, comfortable grip whether you are slicing large loaves, baguettes or cakes. The simple, stylish design means the Classic range suits both modern and traditional kitchens. To protect both the knife and your worktop, we recommend using a SCANPAN chopping board.
To ensure a long life and optimum cutting performance, wash your bread knife by hand after use. Although the knife is dishwasher safe, hand washing is recommended to protect both the blade and handle. Store the knife in a knife block or on a practical SCANPAN magnetic knife rack to avoid damaging the edge.
- Wash by hand with mild washing-up liquid
- Dry the knife thoroughly after washing
- Store the knife safely to preserve its sharpness
Regular care and correct storage extend both the performance and life of your bread knife. The serrated blade needs sharpening less often, but when necessary, use equipment suitable for serrated knives.
