FAQ
About our nonstick pans
Nonstick and ceramic coatings are terms used for several different types of cookware, but the coatings, production methods and durability can vary considerably.
SCANPAN nonstick cookware is designed to withstand metal utensils and to deliver lasting performance.
The coating is developed not only for hob use, but also for use in the oven and on the grill at temperatures up to 250°C. This makes SCANPAN nonstick cookware suitable for a wide variety of delicious meals.
Here are our recommendations for using and caring for SCANPAN nonstick pans and pots to help them last.
Before use
- Wash the product in warm water with washing-up liquid.
During use
- Always heat the dry pan gently until it reaches frying temperature. Test it by sprinkling a little water onto the pan. When the droplets “dance”, the pan is ready. You can then begin frying with or without fat.
- Heating the pan too quickly can reduce its nonstick performance and cause food to stick.
- We recommend cooking at around two-thirds heat. Higher heat is unnecessary because SCANPAN cookware retains and distributes heat efficiently. Damage caused by overheating is not covered by the warranty.
After use
- Wash the product in warm water with washing-up liquid.
- If food or fat has burnt onto the surface due to overheating, fill the product three-quarters full with water. Bring it to the boil over a medium heat, add washing-up liquid and simmer for 15 minutes. Then clean as usual. Repeat if necessary.
General advice
- Cookware with a nonstick coating is not suitable for storing food, for example in the refrigerator. Acidic foods may damage the coating.
- Some visible wear may develop on the coating with use. This is normal and does not affect its cooking performance.
- The warranty does not cover stains, fading or scratches inside or outside caused by incorrect use, utensils or electrical equipment.
- Nonstick products are dishwasher safe, but we recommend handwashing pans and pots in warm water with washing-up liquid. This helps extend their lifespan and preserve the nonstick performance.
- SCANPAN nonstick pans and pots are ovenproof up to 250°C.
SCANPAN cookware allows you to fry without butter, oil or other fat.
Frying with oil
If you use oil in your SCANPAN nonstick cookware, we recommend rapeseed or olive oil. Oils high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as sunflower and grapeseed oil, are more sensitive to heat.
Oil contains no water, so it does not spit while heating. How much fat spits when food is added depends partly on the food’s fat content and the temperature of the pan.
Oil does not clearly show when it is hot enough. If it begins to smoke, it is too hot and should not be used.
To test whether the oil is ready, add a small piece of onion. When the oil sizzles around it, you can begin frying. Alternatively, heat the pan to around two-thirds heat, add the required amount of oil and begin cooking immediately. This prevents the oil from being exposed to excessive heat.
Frying with margarine
Some people find margarine easier to fry with than oil. If you choose margarine, we recommend a product labelled as high in monounsaturated fatty acids and preferably free from trans fats.
